Stained glass appeals to me for several reasons.  I am drawn to the essential line work that glass requires, and the lightness of color brings it to life.  So traditional patterns aren't my work; it is more that glass best expresses my ideas.  Proficiency has helped expand the capabilities of various kinds of glass, opening up design possibilities.  Yet I also enjoy the connection to a centuries-old art, so I have stayed focused on traditional methods.

My latest series is titled City of Bridges. Working from dozens of photos throughout the Cleveland, I’ve designed panels with recognizable structural elements combined with intriguing areas of positive/negative space. I am trying to juxtapose the coarseness and rigidity of old structural steel with unexpected beauty and renewal. Traditional stained glass uses unyielding glass, lead, and gritty cement. Yet the nature of glass brings an unexpected brightness. Combining unusual viewpoints brings a new perspective to these familiar overlooked icons of Cleveland’s industrial past. Many of the details are fused for a much more organic, fluid process; breaking past the limits of traditional lead lines and adding more depth and texture.
